What the numbers include

The starting values are what visitors from each country spent per person inside Japan in 2025, according to the Japan Tourism Agency’s consumption survey, divided by the average length of their stay. They cover the hotel, food, transport within Japan (including rail passes and Shinkansen tickets), paid activities and shopping. They do not include international flights, travel insurance or anything bought before departure.

Averages hide a lot. The accommodation line is dragged up by business travellers and luxury stays and dragged down by people staying with friends; a mid-range hotel room for two in Tokyo or Kyoto often costs more per night than the per-person average suggests, while a business hotel in a regional city costs less. The shopping figure is dominated by a minority of big spenders. Treat the prefilled values as a sanity check and overwrite them with your own plan: the hotels you have actually priced, the rail pass you intend to buy, the number of restaurant meals a day.

Prices are rising. The 2025 survey already reflects a weak yen and higher hotel rates; city accommodation taxes (100–1,000 yen per person per night in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and others) and fare increases announced for 2026 come on top. The news page lists changes as they are confirmed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Japan expensive for tourists?

Eating and getting around is cheaper than in most of Western Europe, North America or Australia: a bowl of ramen 1,000–1,500 yen, a set lunch 1,000–2,000 yen, a subway ride 180–300 yen. Hotels in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka are the big variable, especially in cherry-blossom season, autumn and holidays.

Why are the averages so different between countries?

Length of stay and purpose. Visitors from Europe, North America and Australia stay around two weeks and spend more in total; visitors from Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong take shorter, more frequent trips. The survey covers all travel purposes, so business travel also shifts the hotel figure.

Does the calculator use live exchange rates?

No. It works in yen and only converts if you type today’s rate yourself, so the result never depends on a third-party service and nothing you enter leaves your browser.
