Why these items
Most of the list is ordinary packing, but a few items are specific to Japan and catch people out. You must carry your passport at all times — police can ask to see it. Hospitals expect payment at the counter, so travel insurance with direct billing or a card with a high limit matters. Some common medicines abroad (certain ADHD medicines, strong cold remedies containing pseudoephedrine, codeine above set limits) are restricted; check the Ministry of Health list before you pack them. Suitcases over 160 cm in total dimensions need a reserved “oversized baggage” seat on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen — the baggage checker explains the rule. Public rubbish bins are rare, so a small bag for wrappers saves carrying them in your hand all day.
The pre-trip items — Visit Japan Web, an eSIM, a rail-pass decision, timed tickets — are quicker at home than on hotel Wi-Fi after a long flight. Do them a week before departure and you land with nothing to sort out.
Frequently asked questions
Does Japan use a different plug?
Yes: type A, two flat pins, 100 V. Most phone and laptop chargers accept 100–240 V, so you only need the plug adapter, not a voltage converter.
How much cash should I bring?
Cards and phone payments work in cities, convenience stores, chains and stations, but small restaurants, shrines, markets and rural areas still want cash. 10,000–20,000 yen per person as a float is a common starting point; ATMs at 7-Eleven and post offices accept foreign cards.
