What the numbers say

Japan received 42,683,301 foreign visitors in 2025, +15.8% on 2024. South Korea alone accounted for 22.2%, and the five largest markets — South Korea, China, Taiwan, United States and Hong Kong — for 73%.

By world region, Asia supplied 79% of arrivals, North America 10%, Europe 7% and Oceania 3%. The long-haul markets are smaller in numbers but stay longer and spend more per trip (see the spending ranking).

The fastest-growing markets in 2025, among those with at least 100,000 visitors, were Russia (+96%), Turkey (+74%), India (+35%), Spain (+35%) and Italy (+35%). The slowest were Singapore (+5%), Macao (-4%) and Hong Kong (-6%).

In January–August 2026 total arrivals were -2.7% compared with the same months of 2025. Markets still growing: Turkey (+48%), Mexico (+28%), Russia (+22%), South Korea (+21%) and India (+20%). Markets down on last year: China (-57%).

Why it matters for your trip: the busiest places, the languages on signs and menus, and the shops that stock what you want all follow these numbers. Korean, Chinese and English are the languages you will see most after Japanese; prices in Niseko and Hakuba follow the Australian ski season; and Fukuoka, the closest big city to Busan, is full of Korean weekend visitors.

What JNTO counts

JNTO counts foreign nationals entering Japan each month, excluding foreign residents of Japan. The figures include business travellers and short-stay transit passengers as well as tourists, so they are larger than the number of holidaymakers. Figures for the latest months are estimates and are revised later.

Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan are reported as separate markets, as in the JNTO tables. “Other” rows are the remainder of each region after the named markets.
