Otome Road in Ikebukuro: where it is, how to get there and what is on it

Otome Road is the stretch of Higashi-Ikebukuro, on the east side of Ikebukuro in Tokyo, where shops for female fans of anime, manga and games cluster. No official page gives it a house number or a start and end point, so this guide works from what can be checked: the district Toshima City names, the walking times JNTO gives, and the street addresses of the shops fans go there for. Every address, time and price below comes from an official page read on 13 or 14 October 2026, and each one is listed under Sources at the end.

In short

Otome Road is in Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima City, on the east side of Ikebukuro Station and next to Sunshine City. JNTO says it is an 8 to 10 minute walk from Ikebukuro Station. The K-Books shops fans head for have addresses in Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome and 1-chome; the 3-chome shops are 4 to 8 minutes on foot from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Yurakucho Line. No official page marks where the street starts or ends.

Where is Otome Road? The short answer

Otome Road is not a building or a single shop. It is the name fans and guidebooks give to a few streets in Higashi-Ikebukuro, the part of Toshima City that lies east of Ikebukuro Station, where shops for women who love anime, manga and games stand close together. Otome means maiden, which is why some guides call it Maiden Road.

If you want a pin for your phone's map app, use a shop address rather than the street name. K-Books Ikebukuro Otome-Kan, at 3-15-5 Higashi-Ikebukuro, is the shop that carries the street's name.

What is Otome Road?

Toshima City's English page sorts Ikebukuro into areas and puts Otome Road in the eastern one: "Higashi-ikebukuro area: One can experience the most trendy sub cultures at the Otome Road filled with many anime and role-playing costume shops, and the Sunshine 60 building."

JNTO's Singapore office, writing in May 2021, put the difference from Akihabara in one line: "Unlike Akihabara which is a well-known haven for Anime (otaku) culture that is more popular among fanboys, Otome Road (Maiden Road) in Ikebukuro is very noticeable for its different crowd: women."

Tobu Railway, whose trains run into Ikebukuro, wrote in an English article in 2018 that Otome Road, "next to the Sunshine City, has various shops selling goods related to animations, especially for ladies, as well as vending machines selling unique goods all of which are limited items." That article is eight years old, so treat its vending machines as something that may have moved on.

What you find on and around Otome Road

  • Second-hand character goods: K-Books runs more than 20 small shops in Higashi-Ikebukuro, each with its own theme
  • Otome games and boys' love titles: the K-Books Otome-Kan and the women's doujin shops of Lashinbang and K-Books
  • A butler café: Swallowtail, booked in advance, in the same building as a K-Books shop
  • Cosplay: costume shops, a second-hand cosplay shop and the yearly Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival

Otome Road and Akihabara: two different crowds

Both districts sell anime goods. What sets Higashi-Ikebukuro apart shows in the K-Books shop list: separate shops for otome games and boys' love titles, for 2D idol series, for band and rap series, for 2.5D stage actors and for Jump series, each a few minutes' walk from the next.

This site has a separate page that sets the two side by side, with the main shops in each and the train between them: Akihabara vs Ikebukuro. The page you are reading stays on the Ikebukuro side and goes into the detail.

How to get to Otome Road

Two stations serve the area. Ikebukuro Station is the big one, with JR lines, Tokyo Metro lines and the Seibu and Tobu railways. Higashi-Ikebukuro Station is a smaller Tokyo Metro stop on the Yurakucho Line, closer to the shops at the Sunshine City end. A Suica or PASMO card works on all of them; see how to get a Suica card.

Two ways to walk in

  • From Ikebukuro Station: leave by the east exit and walk towards Sunshine City; JNTO puts the walk at 8 to 10 minutes
  • From Higashi-Ikebukuro Station: take the Yurakucho Line, come up to street level and walk to the shops; K-Books gives 4 to 8 minutes for its 3-chome shops

For Sunshine City itself, its access page names exit 35, on the east side of Ikebukuro Station, as the nearest way out. From Higashi-Ikebukuro there is a covered way in: "Please use the underground passage marked Sunshine City Underground Passage which you'll come upon as you walk toward Exit 6, 7."

Which station is nearer?

That depends on which shops you want. The K-Books English shop list gives two walking times for every Ikebukuro shop, one from the JR east exit and one from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station, and the numbers split neatly by address.

Walking times from the K-Books English shop list

  • Shops in Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome: 6 to 9 minutes from the JR east exit; 4 to 8 minutes from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station
  • Shops in Higashi-Ikebukuro 1-chome: 3 to 8 minutes from the JR east exit; 7 to 11 minutes from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station

So for the Otome-Kan and the other 3-chome shops, Higashi-Ikebukuro Station saves a few minutes. For the 1-chome shops, the JR east exit is the shorter walk. If you plan to see both, arrive at one station and leave from the other.

Ikebukuro Station on the left, Sunshine City to the east and Higashi-Ikebukuro Station to the south-east. No official page marks where Otome Road starts or ends, so the map shows the district rather than a line. Drag or zoom the map to explore. · Open in Google Maps

K-Books shops on and around Otome Road

K-Books is a second-hand chain for anime, manga and game goods. Instead of one big store, it splits its Ikebukuro stock between small shops, each with a theme, and gives each one a name ending in -Kan, meaning hall or building.

K-Books in Higashi-Ikebukuro, from its English shop list

  • 22shops in Higashi-Ikebukuro
  • 12at 3-chome addresses
  • 10at 1-chome addresses
  • 12:00opening on weekdays; 11:30 at weekends and on holidays

The menu at the top of that English list names 21 Ikebukuro shops; the 22nd, the second-hand Cosplay-Kan, appears only in the shop details further down. Every Ikebukuro shop on the list keeps the same hours: 12:00 to 20:00 on weekdays, and 11:30 to 20:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

Three of these share one building at 3-15-5, the Higashi-Ikebukuro Mansion: the Otome-Kan in the basement, Chara-Kan Square on the ground floor and Live-Kan Plus on the first floor up. That one address is a good pin to put in your map app.

The last four are not anime shops, but they stand on the same few streets. The walking times come from the English list; the Japanese shop pages give slightly different figures for a few shops, so treat them as a guide rather than a timetable.

Other shops near Otome Road

K-Books is not alone. Two more names come up again and again on the east side of the station, and Sunshine City is at the end of the walk.

Three more stops within a few minutes

  • animate Ikebukuro main store: 1-20-7 Higashi-Ikebukuro; 5 minutes from the east exit; 10:00 to 21:00
  • Lashinbang: five Ikebukuro shops; the four for anime and games are in Higashi-Ikebukuro 1-chome
  • Sunshine City: the shopping complex the older guides use as the landmark for Otome Road

The floors of the animate main store are set out on this site's Akihabara vs Ikebukuro page.

Lashinbang in Ikebukuro

Lashinbang's English page lists five Ikebukuro shops. One sells K-pop goods only; the other four are in the table below. All five open from 11:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 21:00 on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, which makes them a good first stop before the K-Books shops open at noon.

Women's Doujin Store B1F, 2F, 4F and 5F, 1-15-13

Sunshine City

Tobu's 2018 article placed Otome Road next to Sunshine City, and the complex is easy to find on any map. What is inside it for anime fans, from the Pokémon Center to a Studio Ghibli shop, is covered on the Akihabara vs Ikebukuro page, so it is not repeated here.

Swallowtail, the butler café

JNTO's 2021 article picked out one café: "Another institution here is Swallowtail Cafe, a very popular butler-themed cafe staffed by handsome men." At the door, a doorman checks the booking and a butler then greets each party in turn.

Swallowtail is in the basement of the building at 3-12-12 Higashi-Ikebukuro. The K-Books Doujin-Kan is on the second floor of the same building, so the two are easy to pair.

Swallowtail, from its own pages

  • Tea Time: 10:30 to 18:15; each visit lasts 100 minutes
  • Dinner Time: 18:30 to 21:15; each visit lasts 110 minutes
  • Booking: in advance through the official website, which needs an account and a login
  • No booking: you can still come in if a same-day cancellation leaves a seat free
  • Order: one set per person; a drinks-only souvenir set is also offered
  • Paying: cash or a credit card in one payment; no e-money

Before you go

  • ✅ No photos or video anywhere inside, with no exceptions; part of the outside entrance may be photographed if you ask the doorman first
  • ✅ Visits cannot be extended past the set time
  • ✅ Men are welcome as well as women
  • ✅ Children must be at least five years old
  • ✅ The way down to the basement is by stairs
  • ✅ Allergy requests must reach the café by 18:00 seven days before the visit; halal meals are not offered

The café's own pages are in Japanese, and this site does not quote a price. If you arrive late, the visit still ends at the booked time, and arriving 50 minutes or more late means you will not be let in and a cancellation fee is charged.

Cosplay on Otome Road

JNTO's Singapore article also says: "Otome Road is also famous for cosplay; a variety of cosplay costume shops pepper the area, and there's a high chance of encountering cosplayers who tend to gather at the park along Otome Road." The article does not name the park.

The one fixed cosplay event in the area is the Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival, held around Ikebukuro at the end of October.

Ikebukuro Halloween Cosplay Festival 2026

  • Friday 30 October: the night event, 16:30 to 22:30, at Sunshine City
  • Saturday 31 October: main event, 10:00 to 18:00, around Ikebukuro
  • Sunday 1 November: main event, 10:00 to 18:00, around Ikebukuro

The festival's English page says that "everyone from anime/manga lovers to kids can have fun! The event is packed with stage events, parades, interactive activities, and more!" On Saturday 31 October the festival guide puts the parade on the street it names as Sunshine 60 Street / Animate Street.

Tickets for cosplayers and photographers

The tickets are for two kinds of visitor. If you will be in costume, you need a Cosplay Registration Ticket. If you will photograph cosplayers, you need a Photographer Registration Ticket. If you are doing both, buy the cosplay one. The prices are the same for both kinds.

Ticket Bought in advance Bought on the day
Premium, one day ¥3,980 ¥4,480
General, one day ¥2,980 ¥3,480
Night event ¥3,480 ¥3,980
Premium, three days ¥10,000 ¥11,000
Photographer, junior and senior high school students ¥1,480 ¥1,980
Kids (primary school age and under, cosplay only) Not sold ¥500 a day, cash

The festival's pages also list what general visitors can do: the stage shows, a stamp rally, the parade and a corner where you can try cosplay props. This page did not find a line that says whether a general visitor without a costume or a camera needs a ticket, so check the official site before you go.

Festival rules worth knowing

Cosplay rules from the festival's English page

  • ✅ Change and fix your make-up only in the festival's changing rooms; arriving already dressed from home or a hotel is not allowed
  • ✅ Ask before you photograph anyone in costume
  • ✅ Some places and shops in town do not let people in while in costume
  • ✅ Carry-on cases and other big bags can go in the cloakroom beside the changing rooms
  • ✅ Photos taken at the festival may not be used for commercial purposes

The rule about photos is put plainly: "Taking photos without permission is bad manners." It is good manners on any other day of the year as well.

For visitors who do not speak Japanese, the festival guide says the information staff carry Pocketalk translators, and the main stage in Naka-Ikebukuro Park has live translation called Sentio, which you read by scanning a QR code with your own phone. Rickshaw rides and origami and calligraphy workshops are free, and a souvenir photo session costs ¥8,000 including tax for one group.

Otome Road opening hours

The street has no opening hours of its own. What you can do there depends on which shops are open, and they do not all open at the same time.

Opening hours of the main stops

  • animate Ikebukuro main store: 10:00 to 21:00
  • Lashinbang: 11:00 to 21:00 on weekdays; 10:00 to 21:00 at weekends and on public holidays
  • K-Books: 12:00 to 20:00 on weekdays; 11:30 to 20:00 at weekends and on public holidays
  • Swallowtail: Tea Time 10:30 to 18:15, Dinner Time 18:30 to 21:15, by booking

Paying and selling

Most visitors come to buy, and a few hope to sell. K-Books sets out both on its English page.

Paying at K-Books

  • ✅ Cash
  • ✅ Credit cards: JCB, VISA, MasterCard, American Express and UnionPay
  • ✅ Debit cards: VISA Debit and JCB Debit only
  • ✅ E-money, including Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, Apple Pay, iD and QUICPay
  • ✅ QR payments, including PayPay, Alipay and WeChat Pay

You cannot top up a transport card at the till, and d Payment cannot be used at the Doujin-Kan. Swallowtail is stricter: cash or a credit card in one payment, and no e-money.

Selling is harder for a visitor. K-Books buys second-hand goods, but its English page says: "We cannot purchase from foreign customers who do not have an address in Japan." If you were hoping to trade in goods from home to pay for new ones, plan on paying in full.

A half-day on Otome Road

This route uses the opening times above and finishes near Higashi-Ikebukuro Station, so you can leave from the other station.

A weekday walk, east exit to Higashi-Ikebukuro

  • 10:00: leave Ikebukuro Station by the east exit and start at the animate main store, 5 minutes away
  • 11:00: walk to the Lashinbang shops in Higashi-Ikebukuro 1-chome as they open
  • 12:00: visit the K-Books shops in 1-chome that match your series
  • 13:30: walk on to the 3-chome shops around 3-15-5 Higashi-Ikebukuro, where the Otome-Kan is
  • 15:00: tea at Swallowtail, if you booked a slot
  • 17:00: finish at Sunshine City and take the Yurakucho Line from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station

At weekends K-Books opens at 11:30 and Lashinbang at 10:00, so the whole plan can start half an hour earlier. If you came to Japan mainly for anime, the anime guide for Japan covers the other districts and the real anime locations in Tokyo page covers the places where series are set, including Ikebukuro's own.
