Akihabara vs Ikebukuro: which Tokyo anime district fits your trip?
Akihabara and Ikebukuro are two Tokyo districts full of anime shops, both on the JR Yamanote Line, and they do not sell the same things. This guide sets them side by side: what each has, shop by shop, when the doors open, how to travel between them and whether one day covers both. Every shop, floor and opening time below was read on an official page on 13 October 2026, and each page is listed under Sources.

In short
Choose Akihabara for figures, computer parts, retro games and the Sunday pedestrian zone. Choose Ikebukuro for the animate flagship store, otome and boys' love goods, a Pokémon Center, Studio Ghibli goods and a free anime exhibition space. Both have second-hand anime shops and trading-card shops. Akihabara is 4 minutes from Tokyo Station and Ikebukuro is 8 minutes from Shinjuku Station, both on the JR Yamanote Line, so one day can cover the two.
Akihabara or Ikebukuro: the short answer
Neither district suits every fan better than the other. Both have an animate, second-hand chains and trading-card shops, and beyond that they stock different things. Akihabara has the floors of figure shops, the computer parts and the retro games. Ikebukuro has the animate flagship store, shops for otome games and boys' love titles, and Sunshine City, a shopping complex with a Pokémon Center and a Studio Ghibli goods shop inside it.
This page does not crown a winner. It sets out what each district has, taken from the shops' own pages and from Japan's official tourism guides, so that you can match a district to your shopping list.
Which district fits which plan
- Figures: Akihabara, where Radio Kaikan alone has ten shops selling them
- Computer parts and retro games: Akihabara
- Goods, manga and discs in one big shop: Ikebukuro, at the animate flagship store
- Otome game and boys' love goods: Ikebukuro
- A Pokémon Center: Ikebukuro; Akihabara has none
- Studio Ghibli goods: Ikebukuro, at Donguri Kyowakoku in Sunshine City
- Trading cards: both
- Second-hand character goods: both
- A free anime exhibition: Ikebukuro, at Anime Tokyo Station
- A main street without cars on Sunday afternoon: Akihabara
How the official guides describe the two districts
Two official bodies write about both places: the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) and GO TOKYO, the city's official travel guide. Their wording shows how differently the two districts grew.
Akihabara in the official guides
JNTO sums up the district's change in two sentences. "Once all about gadgets and the latest electronics, Akihabara is now an even mix of electrical goods megastores, maid cafes and all things anime." "To go with its transformation, it has a new nickname—Akiba."
GO TOKYO puts it with more colour: "The area is an urban temple for worshippers of Japanese subcultures with pop idols, and cosplayers."
Akihabara Station
- JR lines: Yamanote, Keihin-Tohoku and Sobu
- Other lines: Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Tsukuba Express
- Shop addresses on this page: all in Sotokanda, Chiyoda-ku
Ikebukuro in the official guides
GO TOKYO's walking guide to Ikebukuro is headed "Northern Tokyo's bustling shopping and entertainment hub", and its district page has a section called "Your subculture alternative to Akihabara". JNTO writes in the same spirit. "Browse Ikebukuro's multitude of shops overflowing with pop culture paraphernalia." "Themed venues like butler and cat cafes also thrive in the area."
The station is large, and the walking guide gives one piece of advice before any other: "Check your exits from the station carefully; the East Exit is dominated by Seibu Ikebukuro department store and the West Exit is home to Tobu Department Store". For anime shopping the east exit is the one to learn. animate, K-Books, Card Labo and Sunshine City all give their walking directions from it.
The same walking guide says that Ikebukuro rivals Akihabara for electronics shops as well as for anime goods. This page compares the anime side only.
Ikebukuro Station
- JR lines: Yamanote, Saikyo and Shonan-Shinjuku
- Other lines: Tokyo Metro Marunouchi, Yurakucho and Fukutoshin; Tobu Tojo; Seibu Ikebukuro
- Shop addresses on this page: Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, except Anime Tokyo Station, which is in Minami-Ikebukuro
What Akihabara has for anime fans
Akihabara packs its anime shopping into the streets beside the station. GO TOKYO names two buildings to start with: "Akihabara Radio Kaikan and the Akiba Cultures Zone, for example, house many stores dedicated to anime, manga and games."

- Radio Kaikan. One minute on foot from the Electric Town exit of JR Akihabara Station, at 1-15-16 Sotokanda. The building opens from 10:00 to 20:00 and has ten floors above ground and a basement. Ten of its shops sell figures, on floors two to seven.
- animate Akihabara. Two buildings at 4-3-1 Sotokanda, which the shop calls the 1st Building and the 2nd Building, both open from 10:00 to 21:00 every day. Floors one to six of the 1st Building hold character goods. The shop's page also lists an animate Akihabara ANNEX, open from 10:00 to 21:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 to 20:00 at weekends and on public holidays.
- Lashinbang. Three second-hand shops: AKIBA Flags on the second floor of the Akiba Cultures Zone, one on the fifth floor of Radio Kaikan, and AKIBA DEEP BASE on the third floor of the Akihabara SIL Building.
- K-Books. The chain lists two Akihabara shops. The one inside Radio Kaikan is on the third floor and sells character goods, CDs, video discs, voice-actor goods, figures, tapestries and doujinshi (self-published comics) on a single floor.
- Card shops. Five inside Radio Kaikan, on the first, seventh and ninth floors.

On Sunday afternoons Chuo-dori, the main street, is closed to cars. GO TOKYO calls it "a lively pedestrian paradise with visitors from all around the world". The street is open to people on foot from 13:00 to 18:00 between April and September and from 13:00 to 17:00 between October and March, and it may be cancelled when rain or strong wind is expected.
What Akihabara lacks is a Pokémon Center. The Pokémon Company's shop list has no shop in the district.
Akihabara at a glance
- Radio Kaikan: ten floors and a basement, 1 minute from the Electric Town exit; 10:00 to 20:00
- animate Akihabara: two buildings at 4-3-1 Sotokanda; 10:00 to 21:00 every day
- Lashinbang: three shops, one of them inside Radio Kaikan
- Card shops: five inside Radio Kaikan, on 1F, 7F and 9F
- Sunday afternoons: Chuo-dori without cars from 13:00
- Pokémon Center: none
This site has two longer guides to the district. For shop-by-shop detail, read what to buy in Akihabara. For figures alone, new and second-hand, read the anime figures guide.
What Ikebukuro has for anime fans
Almost every Ikebukuro shop on this page has an address in Higashi-Ikebukuro, which means East Ikebukuro. There are four things to know about: one very large shop, a street with a nickname, a shopping complex and a free exhibition space.

animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store
GO TOKYO introduces it in one sentence: "Animate's flagship store Animate Ikebukuro Honten, specializing in anime, manga, and video games, can be found close to Ikebukuro Station's east exit."
The shop is at 1-20-7 Higashi-Ikebukuro, five minutes on foot from the east exit, and opens from 10:00 to 21:00. It is on animate's list of tax-free shops. The shop's own directions run like this: leave by the east exit, put the PARCO building behind you and walk down the street the page calls Sunshine-dori. Turn left at the third crossing and keep straight until the animate sign appears on your right.
animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store, floor by floor
- 9F: animate hall BLACK (up to 250 seats) and WHITE (up to 150 seats)
- 8F: Space Galleria, an exhibition space
- 7F: animate ONLY SHOP NORTH and animate ONLY SHOP SOUTH
- 6F: CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays, and video games
- 5F: character goods: trading goods, straps and key rings
- 4F: character goods: clothing and accessories, soft toys, protective covers
- 3F: manga for girls and women, boys' love (BL) titles, and art supplies
- 2F: manga for boys and men, and light novels
- 1F: character goods, the Gratte cafe, shop pick-up and capsule-toy machines
- B2F: animate Theater, up to 208 seats
Three of those floors are for events and exhibitions, not everyday shopping: the theatre in the second basement, the gallery on the eighth floor and the two halls on the ninth. What is on changes, so look at the shop's page before you plan around them.
Otome Road and K-Books
GO TOKYO describes Otome Road as a street dedicated to girls' comics and video games. JNTO's pop culture guide for visitors from the UK recommends it "to people more interested in goods from the romantic shoujo series". Otome means maiden, and an otome game is a romance game written for women.
| Detail | K-Books Ikebukuro Otome-kan | K-Books Ikebukuro Chara-kan |
|---|---|---|
| Address | B1F, 3-15-5 Higashi-Ikebukuro | 1F, 3-15-14 Higashi-Ikebukuro |
| Hours | 12:00 to 20:00 on weekdays; 11:30 to 20:00 at weekends and on public holidays | The same |
| From JR Ikebukuro Station, east exit | 7 minutes on foot | 10 minutes on foot |
| From Higashi-Ikebukuro Station (Yurakucho Line) | 5 minutes on foot | 8 minutes on foot |
| Genres | Otome games, boys' love titles and some works by creators popular with women | Series from Magazine, Champion, Kadokawa and others (Jump serials excluded), plus original anime and sports titles |
| Sells and buys | Character goods of all kinds | Character goods, figures, mascots, clothing and tapestries |
K-Books splits its Ikebukuro stock between many small shops, each with a theme. On 13 October 2026 its shop list had 21 shops in Ikebukuro and 2 in Akihabara. Not all 21 are anime shops: the list includes shops named for K-pop, idols and live shows.
The line-up is moving. On 5 October 2026 K-Books announced changed hours at two Ikebukuro shops while stock moved between them, and on 9 October it announced a refit of the Otome-kan and a new shop for boys' love titles. That new shop was not yet on the shop list when this page was checked.
Sunshine City
GO TOKYO starts with the scale: "Sunshine City is a large-scale complex with virtually all the facilities you can think of housed under one roof." The complex opened in 1978 and has about 220 shops, along with an aquarium, a planetarium, an observation deck and indoor theme parks.
For anime fans the same guide names two shops. "Fans of J-culture converge from around the world at Sunshine City, which is not only home to the Pokemon Center Mega Tokyo, but also a Donguri Kyowakoku, which sells Studio Ghibli-themed items—you'll find merchandise featuring Totoro, Ponyo, characters from Spirited Away, and more."
Four stops inside Sunshine City
- Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo: 2F of the alpa building; 10:00 to 20:00; the Pokémon Card Station is inside it
- Donguri Kyowakoku: Studio Ghibli goods; this page did not confirm its floor
- NAMJATOWN: an indoor amusement park; 10:00 to 20:00, last entry 19:30
- Bandai Namco Cross Store Tokyo: 3F of the World Import Mart Building; 10:00 to 21:00, open all year
GO TOKYO's walking guide says NAMJATOWN has electronic games, an area for desserts and an area for gyoza dumplings. The Cross Store is a group of official shops under one roof. Its page also lists limited-time events, which this page leaves out because they change.
The way in from the station is underground for the last stretch. Sunshine City's access page puts it like this: "Walk down Sunshine 60 Street, and beside Sunshine Vision on the right-side is the entrance for the underground passage (escalator) for Sunshine City."
Anime Tokyo Station
Anime Tokyo Station is an exhibition space about Japanese animation, and it charges nothing at the door.
Anime Tokyo Station in brief
- Price: free
- Hours: 11:00 to 19:00; last entry 18:45, or 18:30 for special exhibitions
- Closed: Mondays (the next weekday if Monday is a public holiday), the New Year period and occasional extra days
- Where: B1F to 2F, Tokyu East No. 5, 2-25-5 Minami-Ikebukuro; 4 minutes on foot from Ikebukuro Station
GO TOKYO explains how often the displays change: "The exhibition space on the second floor is scheduled to hold exhibitions about four times a year featuring a wide range of animations."

It is the one stop in this section that is not a shop, and it fits into the hour before the shops get busy or the hour after your bags are full. This site's Japan for anime fans guide places it among the country's anime museums.
Second-hand anime goods: Ikebukuro or Akihabara?
Both districts have the same two second-hand chains, Lashinbang and K-Books. What differs is how many shops each chain keeps there and what those shops specialise in.
Lashinbang describes itself in its English guide. "Lashinbang is one of Japan's largest pre-owned anime merchandise chains, offering a wide variety of anime, game, and cosplay merchandise!" The size claim is the chain's own; this page only counts its shops. On 13 October 2026 its shop list had 73 in Japan and 14 abroad.
The same guide makes two promises about what is on the shelves. "All products that we sell are original. We do not carry pirated, counterfeit, or sample items." "We rarely sell products with damaged boxes or visible stains."
| District | Lashinbang shops in its English guide | K-Books shops on its shop list |
|---|---|---|
| Akihabara | 3 | 2 |
| Ikebukuro | 5, one of them for K-pop only | 21, including K-pop, idol and live-show shops |
| Nakano | 1 | None |
A longer list does not mean more of what you want. Ikebukuro's shops are small and split by theme, so the useful question is which shop holds your series or your kind of goods. Lashinbang's guide answers it shop by shop.
| Shop and address | Hours | What its page says it sells |
|---|---|---|
| AKIBA Flags: 2F Akiba Cultures Zone, 1-7-6 Sotokanda | 11:00 to 21:00 every day | CDs, DVDs, Blu-rays, figures, anime goods and manga |
| Akihabara Radiokaikan Store: 5F Radio Kaikan, 1-15-16 Sotokanda | 10:00 to 20:00 every day | The latest figures and popular anime merchandise |
| AKIBA DEEP BASE: 3F Akihabara SIL Building, 4-4-3 Sotokanda | 11:00 to 21:00 every day | Doujinshi and fan-made goods; yen cash only |
| Ikebukuro Character Palace: 2F Plaza Inn Ikebukuro Building, 1-20-6 Higashi-Ikebukuro | 11:00 to 21:00; from 10:00 at weekends and on public holidays | Pin badges, capsule-toy prizes, anime goods, figures, cosplay costumes and games |
| Ikebukuro Women's Doujin Store: Kindai Building 21, 1-15-13 Higashi-Ikebukuro | As Character Palace | Doujin goods and outlet items; voice-actor goods in the basement; doujinshi for women on 4F and 5F |
| Ikebukuro Figure Store: 1F Toyokogyo Building, 1-15-8 Higashi-Ikebukuro | As Character Palace | Scale figures and prize figures |
| Ikebukuro Trend Store: 2F Ikebukuro White House Building, 1-20-2 Higashi-Ikebukuro | As Character Palace | The latest anime, game and VTuber goods |
| Ikebukuro K-POP Store: 1F Oak Ikebukuro Building, 1-21-11 Higashi-Ikebukuro | As Character Palace | K-pop goods only; not tax-free |
| Nakano Store: 2F Nakano Broadway, 5-52-15 Nakano | 11:00 to 20:00 every day | Classic and vintage anime goods |
Two of those shops speak to different readers. Of its Akihabara flagship the chain writes: "Lashinbang AKIBA Flags is the largest Lashinbang store in Japan!" Again the superlative is the shop's own. Of Character Palace in Ikebukuro it writes: "This store specializes in merchandise popular with female fans, but everyone is welcome!" The Women's Doujin Store a few doors away is more specific still: "The fourth and fifth floors feature a large selection of women's doujinshi."
K-Books works the same way on a larger scale. Its shop pages list what each shop sells and what it buys from customers, as the table for the Otome-kan and the Chara-kan shows. In Akihabara the chain puts many kinds of goods on one floor of Radio Kaikan; in Ikebukuro it gives each kind its own shop.
Figures, Pokémon and trading cards: which district has what
Figures
Akihabara is the stronger of the two for figures. Radio Kaikan alone has ten shops that sell them, on floors two to seven, and Lashinbang's Radiokaikan Store is among them. The chain says of its own stock: "Figures are the best-selling items, but small items that make great souvenirs are also popular."
Ikebukuro is not empty of figures. Lashinbang runs a shop there for nothing else, and its page promises a good deal: "Discover detailed scale figures, a vast array of prize and crane game figures, and a lineup packed with beautifully sculpted characters!" The K-Books Chara-kan lists figures among the goods it sells and buys. Still, this site found no building in Ikebukuro to match ten figure shops under one roof. The anime figures guide covers the Akihabara shops floor by floor.
Pokémon
Here the answer is simple, because only one of the two districts has an official shop. GO TOKYO's walking guide says of Sunshine City: "Kids will love the large Pokémon Center here."
Trading cards
Both districts have card shops. Akihabara has five inside Radio Kaikan, all open from 10:00 to 20:00. Ikebukuro has three specialist shops in Higashi-Ikebukuro as well as the Pokémon Card Station.
Ikebukuro's three specialist card shops
- Card Labo Ikebukuro: 4F, 1-20-6 Higashi-Ikebukuro, five minutes from the east exit; 10:00 to 21:00
- Hareruya 2 Ikebukuro: 8F, 1-41-6 Higashi-Ikebukuro; 10:00 to 22:00 every day
- Card Rush Ikebukuro: 5F, 1-13-10 Higashi-Ikebukuro; 13:00 to 21:00 on weekdays, 11:00 to 21:00 at weekends and on public holidays
Card Labo shares its street address with Lashinbang's Character Palace, and animate is at the next number, so three stops fall within a few steps. For pack prices, the official vending machines and how the Pokémon Center's lottery sales work, read where to buy Pokémon cards in Tokyo.
Figures, Pokémon and cards by district
- Figures in Akihabara: ten shops in Radio Kaikan, on floors two to seven
- Figures in Ikebukuro: Lashinbang Ikebukuro Figure Store and K-Books Chara-kan
- Pokémon Center in Akihabara: none on the official shop list
- Pokémon Center in Ikebukuro: Mega Tokyo, on 2F of Sunshine City alpa
- Card shops in Akihabara: five inside Radio Kaikan
- Card shops in Ikebukuro: three specialist shops and the Pokémon Card Station
Opening hours side by side
Nothing on this page opens before 10:00, and most of it has closed by 21:00. Inside that window the two districts keep slightly different rhythms, and the second-hand shops start later than the shops selling new goods.
Akihabara hours
| Place | Hours | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Radio Kaikan | 10:00 to 20:00 | The building's hours; its five card shops keep them too |
| animate Akihabara, 1st and 2nd Buildings | 10:00 to 21:00 | Every day |
| animate Akihabara ANNEX | 10:00 to 21:00 on weekdays; 10:00 to 20:00 at weekends and on public holidays | A separate building on the shop's page |
| Lashinbang AKIBA Flags | 11:00 to 21:00 | Every day |
| Lashinbang Akihabara Radiokaikan Store | 10:00 to 20:00 | Every day |
| Lashinbang AKIBA DEEP BASE | 11:00 to 21:00 | Every day; yen cash only |
| K-Books in Radio Kaikan | 12:00 to 20:00 on weekdays; 11:30 to 20:00 at weekends and on public holidays | Third floor |
Ikebukuro hours
| Place | Hours | Note |
|---|---|---|
| animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store | 10:00 to 21:00 | Five minutes from the east exit |
| K-Books Otome-kan and Chara-kan | 12:00 to 20:00 on weekdays; 11:30 to 20:00 at weekends and on public holidays | The chain was changing hours at two Ikebukuro shops in October 2026 |
| Lashinbang, all five shops | 11:00 to 21:00 on weekdays; 10:00 to 21:00 at weekends and on public holidays | One of the five sells K-pop goods only |
| Sunshine City alpa, shopping | 10:00 to 20:00 | Some shops differ |
| Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo | 10:00 to 20:00 | Inside alpa, on 2F |
| NAMJATOWN | 10:00 to 20:00 | No entry after 19:30 |
| Bandai Namco Cross Store Tokyo | 10:00 to 21:00 | Areas inside may differ |
| Anime Tokyo Station | 11:00 to 19:00 | Closed on Mondays; last entry 18:45 |
| Card Labo Ikebukuro | 10:00 to 21:00 | Fourth floor |
| Hareruya 2 Ikebukuro | 10:00 to 22:00 | Every day |
| Card Rush Ikebukuro | 13:00 to 21:00 on weekdays; 11:00 to 21:00 at weekends and on public holidays | Fifth floor |
Three patterns stand out. The two animate shops keep identical hours, 10:00 to 21:00, so neither district wins on that count. K-Books opens latest, at noon on weekdays, in both places. And each district has one large building that shuts at 20:00, an hour before the shops around it: Radio Kaikan in Akihabara and the alpa wing of Sunshine City in Ikebukuro.
Getting to each district, and between the two
GO TOKYO's district pages give train times to both from the places where most visitors start.

Minutes by train, from Tokyo's official guide
- 4Tokyo Station to Akihabara
- 24Tokyo Station to Ikebukuro
- 18Shinjuku Station to Akihabara
- 8Shinjuku Station to Ikebukuro
| From | To Akihabara | To Ikebukuro |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Station | 4 minutes, JR Yamanote Line | 24 minutes, JR Yamanote Line; 17 minutes, Tokyo Metro Marunouchi Line |
| Shinjuku Station | 18 minutes, JR Sobu Line | 8 minutes, JR Yamanote Line |
| Haneda Airport | 45 minutes by train | 1 hour by train; 1 hour 10 minutes by Limousine Bus |
| Narita Airport | About 1 hour 30 minutes by train | 90 minutes by train; 2 hours 25 minutes by Limousine Bus |
The short version: Akihabara is the nearer of the two if you are staying around Tokyo Station, and Ikebukuro is the nearer if you are staying in Shinjuku.
Sunshine City's access page gives its own figures for Ikebukuro, and they differ by a minute here and there: 16 minutes from Tokyo Station on the Marunouchi Line, and from Shinjuku 5 minutes on the JR Saikyo Line or 9 on the JR Yamanote Line. It adds a caution that fits every number in this section. "The travel time is an approximation. It does not include time for transfers or waiting."
Between Akihabara and Ikebukuro
On foot at each end
In Akihabara the walk is short: Radio Kaikan is one minute from the Electric Town exit. Ikebukuro asks more of your feet. animate is five minutes from the east exit, the two K-Books shops are seven and ten minutes, and Sunshine City is further again. Its access page says which way out to take: "East Exit No. 35 of Ikebukuro Station is the closest exit."
For Sunshine City alone there is a second station. The Pokémon Center's page gives about 3 minutes on foot from Higashi-Ikebukuro Station on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line, against about 8 from Ikebukuro Station, and GO TOKYO names exits 6 and 7 of that station.
A rechargeable IC card saves buying a ticket for each of these rides. This site's guide to the Suica card explains how to get one.
Can you do Akihabara and Ikebukuro in one day?
Yes. The ride between them is short and every shop on this page is open for at least eight hours a day. What limits the day is how long you want to browse and how much you can carry, not the clock. The order matters, though, because the two districts close at different times.
One day, two districts
- 10:00, Akihabara: start at Radio Kaikan and animate Akihabara, which both open at 10:00.
- From 11:00: Lashinbang AKIBA Flags opens at 11:00; K-Books opens at 12:00 on weekdays and 11:30 at weekends.
- Early afternoon: take the JR Yamanote Line to Ikebukuro.
- Sunshine City first: the alpa shops and the Pokémon Center close at 20:00, and Anime Tokyo Station admits its last visitors at 18:45.
- Finish at animate and Lashinbang: both stay open until 21:00. K-Books closes at 20:00.
On a Sunday it is worth turning the day round. Start in Ikebukuro at 10:00, when animate, the Lashinbang shops and the alpa shops all open, and reach Akihabara after 13:00, when Chuo-dori closes to cars. From October to March the street reopens to traffic at 17:00, so do not leave the move too late. Radio Kaikan still shuts at 20:00.
On a Monday, leave Anime Tokyo Station out of the plan. It is closed, and when Monday is a public holiday it closes on the next weekday instead.
What to sort out before a two-district day
- Passport: tax-free shops ask to see it.
- Yen in cash: AKIBA DEEP BASE takes nothing else.
- The day of the week: Anime Tokyo Station closes on Mondays, and Chuo-dori is car-free on Sundays only.
- The day's hours: each shop's own page has the last word.
If you have half a day and not a whole one, do not try both. Pick the district that holds more of your list, using the first box on this page.
Nakano Broadway: the third district
Fans who ask about Akihabara and Ikebukuro often ask about Nakano in the same breath. Nakano Broadway is a shopping mall, not a whole district of shops, and it leans towards older and second-hand goods.

Nakano Broadway in brief
- Where: 5-52-15 Nakano, Nakano-ku; 5 minutes on foot from the north exit of Nakano Station
- From Shinjuku Station: around 10 minutes on the JR Chuo Line
- From Tokyo Station: around 25 minutes on the JR Chuo Line
- Mall hours in Tokyo's official guide: 10:00 to 20:00
- Lashinbang Nakano Store: 2F; 11:00 to 20:00 every day
- K-Books: no Nakano shop on its shop list
Lashinbang's own words show what sets the Nakano branch apart from its Akihabara and Ikebukuro shops. "Lashinbang Nakano Store has the largest selection of classic and vintage anime goods." "You may even discover rare vintage collectibles." As with the chain's other claims, the superlative is Lashinbang's and this site has not measured it.
GO TOKYO names Mandarake beside Lashinbang among the mall's shops. This site could not read Mandarake's own pages, so it gives no floors or hours for it here.
Nakano fits best as an add-on from Shinjuku: the same official guide that puts Ikebukuro 8 minutes from Shinjuku Station puts Nakano around 10 minutes away on a different line. The anime figures guide has more on second-hand figure shopping there.
Tax-free shopping in both districts
Tax-free shopping is a national scheme, so the rules are the same in Akihabara, Ikebukuro and Nakano. What differs is which shops take part.

The basics are short. The scheme is for visitors from abroad, the minimum is 5,000 yen before tax spent in one shop on one day, and the shop needs to see your passport. For anything bought from 1 November 2026 the shop charges the price with tax, and the tax is paid back after customs has checked the goods when you leave Japan, which must be within 90 days of buying.
October 2026 is the last month under the older method. The official pages read for this guide describe the new one only, so for anything bought by 31 October, ask the shop how it handles the tax.
Tax-free at the shops on this page
- animate Akihabara, 1st and 2nd Buildings: on animate's list of tax-free shops
- animate Ikebukuro Flagship Store: on the same list
- Lashinbang: eight of its nine Tokyo shops are marked as tax-free in its English guide
- Lashinbang Ikebukuro K-POP Store: marked as not tax-free
- Lashinbang AKIBA DEEP BASE: tax-free, and yen cash only
- Card Labo Ikebukuro: its page says it has started tax-free sales for customers from abroad
This page did not check the tax-free status of K-Books, the other card shops or the shops inside Sunshine City, so ask at the till. A shop that says nothing on its website may still be a tax-free shop.
To see what the tax comes to on what you plan to buy, use this site's tax-free calculator. The scheme as a whole, including the November change, is explained in what to buy in Japan.
Frequently asked questions
Is Akihabara or Ikebukuro better for anime?
It depends on what you want to buy. Akihabara has more figure shops, with ten in Radio Kaikan alone, plus computer parts and retro games. Ikebukuro has the animate flagship store, shops for otome and boys' love goods, a Pokémon Center and a free anime exhibition space. Both have animate, Lashinbang, K-Books and trading-card shops.
Is Ikebukuro worth visiting for anime fans?
Yes, above all if your interests include otome games, boys' love titles, Pokémon or Studio Ghibli goods. How far is Ikebukuro from Akihabara?
The two stations are on the same JR Yamanote Line, so there is no change of train. No official page read for this guide gives the time. Tokyo's official guide puts Akihabara 4 minutes and Ikebukuro 24 minutes from Tokyo Station on that line, which suggests about 20 minutes between them. Treat that as an estimate.
Can you visit Akihabara and Ikebukuro in one day?
Yes. Start in Akihabara at 10:00, when Radio Kaikan and animate open, and move to Ikebukuro in the early afternoon. In Ikebukuro, go to Sunshine City before animate, because the alpa shops close at 20:00 and animate stays open until 21:00. On Sundays the reverse order lets you see Akihabara's main street without cars.
Where is Otome Road in Ikebukuro?
The official guides describe it as a street of shops for girls' comics and games but give no address for it. Two K-Books shops that sell such goods are in Higashi-Ikebukuro 3-chome: the Otome-kan, 7 minutes on foot from the east exit of JR Ikebukuro Station, and the Chara-kan, 10 minutes.

Akihabara. Radio Kaikan has ten shops that sell figures on floors two to seven, one minute from the station. Ikebukuro has figures too, at the Lashinbang Ikebukuro Figure Store and the K-Books Chara-kan, but this site found no single building there with as many figure shops.

Ikebukuro or Akihabara for Pokémon cards?
